A few words on the project…

The site is in desert zone. The project recreated on the airport an artificial zone of 25 000m ², aiming at recycling the available resources (water and air). The reflection HQE ® was integrated into the phase of functional programming of the airport in continuity with the global arrangement of the site


Background

The objective is to create a green weft of restoration of the resources at the heart of the terminal. This one will constitute an element integrated into its environment thanks to ecological and educational systems of treatment, by creating an innovative management of waters in adequacy with ecological but also economic principles.


Solution

The project suggests setting up a system of phytoremédiation, that is the treatment of the pollutions by vegetated systems. The objectives are multiple: recycle grey waters produced by the activity of the terminal of the airport of Jeddah and value the water so treated for another use (irrigation of gardens, toilet, cleaning), at the end reach an environmental certification on the theme of the water. The filtering ponds are effective for the treatment : MY, of the organic load (DCO and DBO5), nitrogenous compounds (nitrates, ammonia water), some phosphor. Pollutants are largely degraded by microorganisms associated to the roots of vegetables. This biodegradation can be made only in the presence of oxygen. The organized artificial aeration will allow to guarantee the absence of smells near the installation. Vegetables will also participate themselves in the aeration of the substratum thanks to the mechanical action of their stalk and their roots. Finally a party of pollutants is directly integrated into the vegetable biomass and is exported during the operations of maintenance. These ponds are sealed by a device of stanching by a membrane 10/10 partner in an antipoinconnant felt-tip. The chosen plants are quite provided with capacities recognized épuratoires. They will be crashed in rocky or sablo-rocky substrata endowed with hydraulic parameters ( hydraulic specific conductivity) allowing the percolation or the translation of waters. They are species adapted to the high temperatures met to Jeddah. It is interesting to operate in ponds several different species to assure first of all the biodiversity of the system and the visual wealth of the group, and on the other hand to assure the continuity of the treatment in case of disease or deficiency of one of the species. The whole arrangement constitutes a sensitive environmental landscape, with vegetable dépuratives and ornamental species. The atmosphere creates will be the one of a tropical wet zone densely standing.


Strengths of project

The phytoremédiation presents numerous advantages with regard to compared with the traditional processes: excellent elimination of the microbiological pollution, Moderate costs of investment and functioning, very good landscaped integration, Recycling of water resources, to Guarantee the quality of use. On the environmental plan, the set up system is long-lasting and its impacts on the environment are limited. Needs in energy for its functioning are optimized. The minimized operations of maintenance will be the following ones: check and weekly cleaning of the hydraulic works (pumps of lifting, looks, pipes), annual cutting of vegetables, the annual cleaning of the surface of filters.
